Our History
THREE GENERATIONS STRONG
In 1947 Jack Kuykendall started Square Deal Lumber with a 1941 Chevrolet truck and 5 acres of land. One man, one faithful truck and a vision. From these humble beginnings Square Deal Lumber & Hardware has played a major role in the growth of the Eugene-Springfield area, supplying materials for hundreds of building projects.
“Jack used to pick up a unit of lumber in varying dimensions, and drive around town selling it” according to James Kuykendall, Jack’s grandson and current owner. “My dad, Bud Kuykendall, started working here in the early 50’s and earned 25 cents an hour. In the mid-60’s, after he graduated from the University of Oregon he started working here full time, and became President of the company in the late 1980’s.”
"Bud always said that our longevity as a company is due to our loyal employees, solid business practices and some unusual business practices when it comes to serving our customers."
“Satisfaction is guaranteed every order, every time,” says James Kuykendall. “Fast service and FREE DELIVERY, even the smallest order, such as a bag of nails or a hammer, is delivered free. We’ve been doing that for over 65 years."
